New phylogenetic trees in VetBact
So far only few phylogenetic trees have been included on the bacterial pages of VetBact. However, within a few months we hope to increase the number of trees significantly. We have started to constuct trees for the genus Clostridium and a phylogenetic tree can now be found on all clostridia pages of VetBact. The trees are based on prealigned 16S rRNA gene sequences retrieved from RDP (Ribosomal Database Project). The trees have been constructed on line by using the computer program “Tree Builder” at the website of RDP. The images of the trees were further revised by using the GNU Image Manipulation Program – GIMP.

Visitors from Alexandria University
We have currently four researchers from the High Institute of Public Health, Alexandria University, Egypt visiting our university (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences – SLU) for three weeks. The visit is a part of the start-up of a new three-year project ‘Molecular Epidemiology of Campylobacter spp. in Broiler Meat and Quantitative Modeling of the Risk of Human Campylobacteriosis in the Egyptian Setting’ funded by the Swedish Research Council. For more information about the project, please contact Sofia Boqvist (sofia.boqvist@slu.se) at SLU.

New professor in veterinary bacteriology
From July 1, 2015, Professor Bengt Guss was appointed professor in veterinary bacteriology at the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Public Health (BVF) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences – SLU). Professor Guss was earlier employed as professor in microbiology at the Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences (SLU). The research of Professor Guss has been focused on pathogenicity factors and vaccine development concerning staphylococci and streptococci. More information about the research of Professor Guss and his colleague Associate Professor Lars Frykberg, who has also moved to BVF, can be found on the website of SLU.
Lectures on VetBact in China
In February and March 2015, Karl-Erik Johansson was invited to spent a few weeks in China to give lectures in bacteriology for Faculty Members of the Faculty of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine and for the veterinary students at the Qingdao Agricultural University (QAU) in the Shandong province. The teacher exchange between QAU and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences is supported by the Linnaeus – Palme programme.
To facilitate the use of VetBact for Chinese students, we have in collaboration with teachers at the Veterinary Faculty of QAU translated certain parts of VetBact. For instance, all bacterial names can now be found in Chinese on VetBact. The Chinese names will appear in a popup window if you first click on Species/Subspecies and then choose the link “List of bacterial names in Chinese”.

Proteus vulgaris and Escherichia coli – new images
We have added a new Gram staining image of Proteus vulgaris and we have replaced one Gram staining image of Escherichia coli, which was of bad quality, with a new one. We have also added images of Proteus vulgaris cultivated on blood agar, purple agar, CLED agar and MacConkey agar.
Lise-Lotte Fernstöm (BVF, SLU) has prepared the agar plates and performed the Gram staining.
